peresNew York (September 28, 2016) — With heavy hearts, Magen David Adom (MDA) and American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA) mourn the passing of one of Israel’s founding leaders, Shimon Peres.

Peres held many critical posts and titles in his illustrious life and career, including, most recently, the presidency of Israel. But it was his charisma, vision, wisdom, and pioneering spirit that endeared him to so many people in Israel, the United States, and around the world. As apolitical organizations, MDA and AFMDA deeply revered Peres’ unique personality, determined leadership, and courageous spirit and hope they can continue fulfilling that part of his incredible legacy.

Peres moved to Tel Aviv from Poland in 1934, four years after the creation of MDA. As a leader in many of Israel’s wars in which MDA would regularly evacuate and treat injured Israel Defense Forces soldiers, he was intimately familiar with MDA’s work. Later in his career, Peres would continue supporting the organization, through appearances at various MDA events.

“There is no doubt that Mr. Peres was a unique individual in his generation, a true symbol of Zionism, and a revered and loved man in Israel and around the world,” said MDA Director-General Eli Bin. “He will be missed by all of us. On behalf of MDA, I wish to express our deepest condolences to the Peres family. May his memory be a blessing.”
