AFMDA’s New York City Young Leadership event was a huge success with over fifty young professionals coming out to enjoy the work of Valerie Hird at the Nohra Haime Gallery.

As delicious hors d’oeuvres floated around the room, young professionals enjoyed glasses of wine and conversation against the vivid backdrop of Valerie Hird’s “Origination” exhibit. As the evening continued, event co-chairs Rebecca Guttman Wichs, Kate Levy, and Stella Amar gathered the crowd to speak about the lifesaving work of American Friends of Magen David Adom. To offer a personal anecdote, previous MDA overseas volunteer Dr. Jason Nehmad shared his emotional experience working side-by-side with the paramedics in Israel.

During one of Nehmad’s shifts a call came in for someone who was severely injured. But to reach the victim the MDA team knew they would have to travel through a dangerous neighborhood. They could have waited for an IDF escort, but the paramedic also realized he didn’t have time to wait, with the victim’s life hanging in the balance. The paramedic, a young man with children to go home to, put on a flack jacket, handed one to a concerned Nehmad and said, ‘let’s go’.

“He is a true hero, to have risked his life to save a complete stranger. Now it is our duty to do what we can to help them, even though they are complete strangers. We must help them save lives in Israel.”
