Magen David Adom Earthquake Drill at Knesset in Jerusalem 2

Imagine the headline, “Knesset building damaged by major earthquake.” Questions immediately fill your head — Fatalities? Injuries? To be prepared for just such a national emergency, Magen David Adom (MDA) must regularly test its ability to respond to any national crisis. On June 12 and 13, Magen David Adom held an earthquake emergency preparedness and rescue drill at the Knesset in Jerusalem. Organized and led by MDA, the drill mobilized the Knesset Guard, Israel Fire and Rescue Services, Israel Police, and IDF’s Home Front Command.

Throughout the drill, MDA teams were challenged to treat more than 30 different major injuries. Multiple MDA vehicles were deployed during the course of the drill, including MDA’s National Command and Control Center vehicle. For the first time, an MDA medevac helicopter provided simulated life-flight services during the drill.

“This drill is intended to test and reinforce the cooperation between rescue teams in a major incident at a high-profile and important location,” said MDA Director-General Eli Bin. “During the drill, teamwork between the different forces were assessed, along with MDA’s new and advanced capabilities. We are preparing for any crisis, because we must be able to provide the best and fastest medical response possible.”

With a biochemical attack an ever-present risk, MDA led an emergency preparedness drill last year at the Knesset, working in close collaboration with the Knesset Guard, Israeli special forces, Israel Fire and Rescue Services, and the Knesset doctor.
