MDA and AFMDA Mourn the Passing of Dr. Charles Krauthammer

Dr. Charles Krauthammer (center) was the keynote speaker at the 2016 AFMDA Boca-Delray Event at which Bernie (at right) and Billi Marcus (at left), announced a $25 million gift from their foundation to MDA’s new national blood services center.

In a Washington Post op-ed in March 2000, Charles Krauthammer did something few, if any, nationally syndicated columnists have ever done.

He came to the defense of Magen David Adom.

At a time when MDA was being denied admission to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Dr. Krauthammer argued vehemently against the snub and in support of the late American Red Cross President Dr. Bernadine Healy’s advocacy efforts on behalf of MDA. Dr. Krauthammer’s column brought the issue to the public. Ultimately, MDA was granted admission to the international body in 2006.

So it is with great sadness that the MDA and AFMDA families join a worldwide community in mourning the death of Dr. Krauthammer, who passed away yesterday after a battle with stomach cancer.

A writer and thinker of extraordinary capacity, Dr. Krauthammer’s political leanings mattered not to MDA; his compelling and outspoken support of its lifesaving work did. He spoke at a number of AFMDA events — most recently in 2017 at the Palm Beach Celebration of Life Gala — and at every occasion, extolled the virtues of MDA’s moral and ethical code that valued life above all.

America has lost a brilliant mind. And MDA has lost a true friend.

May his memory be for a blessing.
