MDA To Open Israel’s First Breastmilk Bank

MDA’s National Blood Bank recently announced that it will soon open Israel’s first breast milk bank to allow nursing mothers to donate surplus milk for babies who do not have access to it.

There are approximately 500 milk banks around the world, but this will be the first one in Israel. It is scheduled to begin operation in April 2018 and is being set up in conjunction with Israel’s Health Ministry and the Israel Milk Bank, a non-profit organization that works toward creating a human milk bank in Israel.

“This collaboration enables the unification of knowledge from three different bodies for one critical goal: to increase the chances of survival and health of premature babies and newborns in Israel,” said MDA Blood Services Director Professor Eilat Shinar, who oversees MDA’s national blood bank and all its services.
