Ever since their recent wedding, Magen David Adom EMTs Avi and Tamar Hayat, both 21, no longer respond to emergency calls separately, but work together as a team.
The couple’s love story began in the field three years ago when MDA dispatched them both to an emergency call. Avi, who was in training to be an EMT, asked Tamar, who was already a certified EMT, for help with his studying. “I witnessed her professionalism firsthand and knew I could learn a lot from her expertise,” Avi recalled.
Soon, Avi and Tamar’s professional relationship blossomed into a romantic one. Now the newlyweds, both MDA EMTs, respond to emergency calls together in the ambulance parked outside their home in Rishon Lezion.
“MDA is woven into the fabric of our relationship, it’s fundamentally part of our combined identity,” the couple shared. “We even wore our distinctive yellow MDA vests over our formal clothes at our wedding.”
While volunteering together is meaningful, it can have its challenges: “we’ve had to abandon our shopping cart in the store to rush to an emergency more than once,” said the Hayats.
However, all in all, the Hayats are happy to be giving back, together. “While volunteer work is inherently rewarding, volunteering for MDA together is extremely meaningful.”
