Paramedics & EMTs

Magen David Adom has 1,800 paramedics, the largest provider of paramedics in Israel. They join the more than 35,000 volunteers who proudly represent Israel’s national EMS organization.

Because of their more extensive training, paramedics are typically assigned shifts aboard MDA’s Mobile Intensive Care Unit ambulances, which are used to treat the most seriously injured or critically ill patients. They are also certified to intubate patients to maintain respiration and administer a wide range of medications.

During surges of coronavirus cases in Israel, patients vital signs were monitored not just by the EMTs at the scene, but also by paramedics working from MDA’s National Operations Center who use technology that enables them to see patient data remotely. The groundbreaking initiative, still used today, has provided an extra level of care that ensures signs of potentially serious medical conditions are addressed immediately, even when the patient is seemingly in good condition.

Paramedics are the most highly trained of Israel’s EMTs, undergoing more than 1,500 hours of training before receiving their EMT-P certification, compared to 200 hours for EMTs (EMT-B) or 400 hours for senior EMTs (EMT-I).

The extensive two-year training to certify one paramedic costs $36,000.
