Israel faces a critical blood shortage. Injured civilians, soldiers, hospital patients, and women in labor all depend on available blood to survive.
Magen David Adom is responding with a new approach: mobile blood donation units set up inside residential buildings. This lets Israelis donate without leaving home or violating Home Front Command restrictions.
The first pilot ran in Givatayim, in a 15-story building with a bomb shelter. Donors all said the same thing: they wanted to give blood but didn’t feel safe leaving home. This initiative let them donate blood in their own building, in full compliance with Home Front Command guidelines.
“Magen David Adom is ready to expand blood donation efforts wherever the public is,” said Uri Shacham, MDA chief of staff. “At a time when movement is restricted and people are concerned about gathering in public spaces, we are bringing our mobile blood donation units right to people’s doorsteps. Every unit of blood saves lives, especially during a complex security situation like this. I invite building committees and residents who meet the criteria to contact our coordinators and take part in this special initiative.”
To host a donation event, buildings must have enough eligible donors, a certified protected space or Home Front Command-approved underground parking facility on site, and confirmed resident participation before a unit can be deployed.
