After narrowly surviving a serious motorcycle accident, Magen David Adom volunteer Amit Asael uses his experience as a patient to help others as a volunteer.
Three years ago, Asael, 49, was critically injured when his motorcycle was hit by a car near Jaffa’s Clock Square. He suffered a severe head injury and was on the verge of death when MDA teams arrived at the scene and gave him life-saving medical treatment including medication and ventilation before transporting him to the hospital. Asael was hospitalized for three months and unconscious for about half of that time.
A year after his accident, Asael sought out the MDA team who saved his life and they had a tearful reunion. He decided at that moment to become a MDA volunteer himself and save others.
“This terrible accident really taught me to appreciate and value life,” he reflected.
Asael completed a MDA first aid course and has been an active volunteer in the Kiryat Ono area. Soon, he will conclude MDA’s EMT course.
Though he continues to suffer with lingering pain from the accident, when he is on call, he is able to completely focus on his patients and use his experience to support them.
“I understand the perspective of the injured people when I come to treat them,” Asael said.
Coincidentally, one of the first incidents Asael assisted with as a volunteer was a motorcycle accident.
“I was afraid to go to the scene of the accident at first,” he remembers, “but I am thankful that I went and could give my all and help the wounded.”
