New York — Catherine Reed, formerly chief development officer for American Friends of Magen David Adom, has been named chief executive officer, a position that’s effective January 1, 2021.

“Cathy has been instrumental in many of the organization’s recent successes,” said Mark D. Lebow, chairman of the board of American Friends of Magen David Adom. “Under her tenure as chief development officer, AFMDA raised funds to build the new Marcus Blood Services Center for Israel, helped greatly increased the public’s awareness of MDA’s work in Israel, and expanded the breadth of MDA’s support.

“Given her experience and leadership at the organization, it was evident she was the most qualified person to be the organization’s next chief executive officer,” he said.

Ms. Reed will replace David M. Frankel, who led the American organization since 2015, and who will be stepping down from his position at the end of the year.

“In my new capacity, I look forward to helping oversee the completion of the Marcus Blood Center, expand support for Magen David Adom and its lifesaving work, and tap into new markets to fund even more cutting-edge healthcare initiatives in Israel, including MDA’s newly launched telemedicine program,” Ms. Reed said.

“The rewards of this job are unambiguous — to know we’ve played a role in saving thousands of people’s lives every year.”

Ms. Reed came to AFMDA in 2016 from the 92nd Street Y in New York, where she held positions as director of development and, more recently, as associate executive director. Previously, she held development positions at Hadassah, where she worked for more than 14 years, including as national development director.

She holds an MBA in marketing and international business from New York University’s Stern School of Business, a master’s degree from Harvard University, and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Houston.
